Liklik Lipstik Workshops

To maintain the interest and participation of peers, TL2 continued to develop innovative ways and spaces to share and discuss information. One such strategy was the ‘Liklik Lipstick’ workshops, which brought together small groups of beneficiaries (up to 10) to discuss beauty tips – how to apply makeup, nail polish, or how to style hair. TL2 provided basic beauty supplies and mirrors so that participants could share and try techniques.

During each session, the facilitator used local knowledge and context to introduce targeted conversations relevant to the key populations present. Topics included recent events (attacks) that prompted discussions on safety and security, local parties or festivals that resulted in conversations on responsible alcohol use, emerging sex work client requests to stimulate talk on navigating transactional sex negotiations. With the primary focus on beauty and makeovers, these sessions provided an informal environment in which WES and transgender people openly shared experiences, asked questions and supported one another to find context-specific solutions to local challenges (using a risk reduction approach).
